Certified Municipal Officials Program

In 2001, the League developed the CMO program in an effort to address a nationwide movement dedicated to developing efficient and effective community leaders by providing meaningful information on topics that will expand the elected official's knowledge and capabilities.
There are three levels of certification officials can obtain through the CMO program:
Basic, Advanced and Professional Development.

Mississippi municipalities are hearing more about AI every day, but hearing about it and knowing what to do with it are two different things. Many local governments are stuck between two extremes: moving too fast without guardrails, or drafting policies so restrictive that they shut down innovation before it even starts.

The reality is that most AI policies written today are based on fear of the unknown rather than experience with the technology. And that's a problem, because policies built without hands-on understanding tend to create more roadblocks than protections.

In this session, we'll give Mississippi municipal leaders a practical framework for approaching AI: how to evaluate it, how to experiment responsibly, and how to build policies that protect your community without holding your organization back.

Join the MS Heritage Trust in Brookhaven for the 2026 Listen Up! Historic Preservation Conference and Heritage Awards!

MML members will receive 2 CMO elective credits for attending.

The Art of Preservation

Preservationists and artists have long been allies in the fight to save historic places. From rescuing old theaters to once again host plays, dance recitals and symphonies, repurposing old commercial storefronts and dilapidated barns to become studios and turning abandoned schools into museum galleries, preservation advocates understand that historic buildings are the perfect frame for creativity, purpose and community pride.

Conference highlights include a tour of beautiful downtown Brookhaven led by John Lynch and Dr. Kim Sessums and the 2026 America 250 Heritage Awards.
